Five tourist islands do most of the work. Java holds Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Bromo, and Ijen. Bali is the hub: south beaches, Ubud, Sidemen, and the Nusa islands. Lombok and the Gilis sit east (Padang Bai–Lembar ferry 4–5 hours, 40,000–60,000 IDR). Sumatra has Lake Toba. Further east, Labuan Bajo is the gate to Padar, and Sorong is the gate to Wayag. Domestic flights are how you hop. The notes do not list a national emergency number.

Clothes
Beach and pool: swimwear stays there. Temples: sarong and sash, shoulders and knees covered. Aceh: full coverage and no alcohol. Jakarta offices do batik on Fridays. Rural villages prefer covered shoulders.
Food
Nasi goreng, mie goreng, sate, nasi Padang with rendang, gado-gado, soto, sambal on the side. Eat with the right hand when you eat with your hands. Street meals are the 15,000–40,000 IDR band. Add sambal slowly.
Marriage
Weddings follow the ethnicity: Javanese procession and gamelan, Balinese Hindu rites, Minangkabau property through the mother's line. Hotels in Bali, Jakarta, and Yogyakarta do not ask foreign couples for a marriage certificate. Some guesthouses in Aceh and rural Lombok might.
History
Srivijaya, then Majapahit, then the trading sultanates, then the VOC in Batavia and a colonial century and a half. Independence was declared 17 August 1945. The 2004 tsunami killed more than 170,000 in Aceh and was followed by the peace deal. The capital move to Nusantara is projected for 2045 in these notes.

Ramadan: eating in public by day is discouraged, and illegal only in Aceh. Tip 10% if the bill has no service charge, and 5,000–10,000 IDR for a delivery rider. GoFood and GrabFood delivery is 5,000–15,000 IDR; ShopeeFood is 3,000–10,000.
